Merchant classic: accepting girocard payments the easy and uncomplicated way

As an authorised network operator, we have been processing cashless payments with the girocard (formerly: electronic cash) since 2001. In the past years, we have approved a whole range of card payment devices in our network operations.

We offer safe access to cashless payments for customers of differering merchants, service providers and self-employed persons. As a technical service provider, we take over:

  • the operation of the high-availability network node computer including back-up system

  • the routing of all transactions to the credit banking industry head offices

  • the technical operational monitoring of the system (24/7)

  • the provision of 3rd level support

You remain the visual identity for the customer - we take care of the rest.

Our services

Clearing and settlement

We generate the turnover postings (direct debits and credit notes) of the payments made at your payment terminals every bank working day and initiate them in the payment transactions.

In doing so, we directly retain the DK and user fees to be paid and transfer them to the appropriate bodies.

Reporting

You need numbers to keep an eye on the development of your business at all times? We provide you with the necessary statistics.

You tell us what you need and we create the appropriate standard reporting. And if you need evaluations at short notice, that's no problem for us either.

Complaints processing

Despite all the automation, discrepancies occasionally arise when booking funds. Whether it's recalculations of girocard payments by the customer or queries from merchants about claims from their cash register data, we will be happy to handle the clarification of these cases for you.

cyberJack® POS

We were the first network operator in Germany to receive approval for the "simplified, distributed" terminal specified by The German Banking Industry Committee (DK).

This terminal also enables micro-enterprises, for which the acceptance of cashless payments has not been profitable so far, to process these payments.

How does this terminal work?

The simplified, distributed terminal was developed together with the company REINER SCT. The payment terminal consists of 3 components:

  1. Card reader

  2. Acceptance app for Android or iOS

  3. Terminal server.

The card reader (cyberJack® POS) and the necessary acceptance app for the mobile device are provided by REINER SCT. It is they who are responsible for the distribution of the "girocard smart POS". We operate the terminal server as the central communication and processing component. It takes over the complete flow control of the process as well as the associated transaction processing. Due to a specially developed software module, connecting other network operators to our terminal server is no problem.

In general, the mobile device (smartphone/tablet) is already available at the merchant's premises. All they have to do is purchase the inexpensive card reader and install the free acceptance app on their mobile device. After only a few minutes, the system is up and running. The merchant can now enter the amount due into the app on his mobile device. A request to insert the card and enter the PIN will appear on the card reader.

A security module for PIN encryption has been built into the reader so that authorisation takes place via the chip of the girocard by entering the card PIN. The payment is forwarded to the terminal server via an XML interface. The security requirements of DK have therefore been fully met. For the payment guarantee provided by the girocard system, the merchant only pays a small share of the turnover as a fee.

The cyberJack® POS card reader can be purchased from electronics retailers or via the Internet. The girocard is still the most popular cashless payment method among Germans.

What are the advantages of the "girocard smart POS" terminal?

The "girocard smart POS" payment terminal offers a series of benefits:

  • low procurement costs By distributing the system over the three components and focusing on the girocard system, a light and slim terminal was developed that can be purchased at attractive conditions.

  • mobile usable Due to the small dimensions of the card reader and the mobile end device (smartphone/tablet), the acceptance of card payments is always and everywhere possible.

  • real-time transaction overview We developed a special user interface that allows the merchant to view all details of his completed transactions in real time. This means that the merchant always has a complete overview.

  • integratability You already have an existing POS system and would like to continue using it? Integrating the payment app into existing systems is no problem with the free software development kit.

  • fully digital In addition to the possibility of issuing the receipt via a WLAN or Bluetooth printer, receipt delivery via e-mail, NFC or QR code is also possible. This makes the entire payment process fully digital.

Are you interested in the simplified, distributed terminal and want to learn more about it? The REINER SCT team is looking forward to answering your questions about the system.

Merchant classic - The most important questions (FAQ)

What is a "girocard network operator"?

Network operators in the sense of the German Banking Industry Committee (DK) are companies that operate a terminal network for the acceptance of the girocard (formerly: electronic cash). In doing so, the DK specifies the quality features, especially the security aspects for standardised operation and access to the girocard system in conformity with the rules.

What is a POS terminal?

A POS (Point of Sale) terminal is a card reader that enables cashless payment at points of sale, for example at supermarkets, petrol stations or cinemas. This type of terminal is known as the "girocard smart POS". It consists of the card reader (cyberJack® POS), the acceptance app and the terminal server.

What does the term "near field communication (NFC)" mean?

Near field communication provides the technical foundation for contactless payments. NFC enables wireless data transmission. This means that both devices must be in close proximity to each other to enable transmission. This also makes it more difficult for third parties to misuse data. As a result, for example, the smartphone or a tablet can be used for payment by means of corresponding apps.

Where can I acquire the cyberJack® POS card reader?

The card reader can be purchased in specialised shops, in a large number of electronics stores or on the Internet.
